Getting to the Top in Human Resources

Oxygen has published a report, ‘Key Steps to Becoming a FTSE HR Director’, based on interviews with almost 50 senior HR Directors.  The participants were asked to consider that they were advising a high potential HR professional about the career experiences they should seek in order to maximise their opportunity of becoming a FTSE HR Director.  Using a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews, the HR Directors were asked to rate 12 career experiences on a scale ranging from ‘critical’ to ‘not required’.

Despite the varied backgrounds of the participants, there was a strong consensus on the key experiences.  The themes that emerged are:

  • Understanding the business and its commercial and financial drivers
  • Expertise in spotting, acquiring and retaining key talent
  • International exposure and experience of leading multi-cultural teams
We believe our research will help organisations to guide more effectively the careers of HR professionals and will also enable HR professionals themselves to manage proactively their careers and ensure they have the breadth of experience for the most senior roles in the function, both in their current organisations and in order to be able to compete in the open market.

The Building Blocks for Career Development in Finance

In partnership with the Finance Team at The Prudential we have identified ways in which companies can most successfully manage the high level of potential in their finance teams and provide the key experiences needed for finance professionals to become good CFOs.

This knowledge is clearly critical to all organisations in enabling succession planning. It will help companies to recruit and retain the highest calibre talent and allow individuals to maximise their potential, fulfilling their career aspirations.  The research involved conducting interviews with senior finance executives in a FTSE 20 company and then comparing and contrasting their opinions with a quarter of the current FTSE 100 CFOs. A summary of the report is available below.
